Derived from a striking 6th–7th century earring in The Met collection, this unusual design in 18K gold plate features hanging discs decorated with an enamel finish in a pleasing circular pattern and adorned with glass pearls—a pair with timeless appeal.
Earrings such as the original were fashionable in Italy for at least a century before the arrival of the Langobards, Germanic nomads who invaded Byzantine Italy in 568. This style of earring was adapted by Langobardic women—as the Museum’s rare example likely was.
